Description
This is the Monumento aos Restauradores, an obelisk monument that stands in the center of Praca dos Restauradores in Lisbon Portugal. The tall white monument commemorates the independence of Portugal from 60 years of Spanish rule in 1640. Translated into English means the Monument to the Restorers and celebrates all the soldiers who died during the struggle for independence. This volatile stage of Portuguese history was the gradual transition from the Habsburg dynasty to the rise to power of the House of Braganza who ruled Portugal until 1908. The monument is 30 meters tall. At its base are two angels representing independence and victory. The monument was inaugurated in 1886.
